Health Information

Overview

We are fortunate to have Mrs. Jill Mategrano as our school nurse. Her responsibilities include immediate first aid, consultation as a member of the student services team and availability to discuss any medical issues you may have regarding your child.

School principals or the nurse can administer medicine to a student only if a signed physician order is provided and District 135 Administration forms are completed. This policy is inclusive of both prescription and over the counter medication. The medication must be brought to school by the parent or guardian in the original, properly labeled, container.

The health office phone number is (708) 364-4837.

Some guidelines for you to use when deciding if your child is too ill to attend school. Keep your child home if:

  • Your child’s oral temperature exceeds 100 degrees or 1-2 degrees above your child’s normal temperature. A child with a fever should remain home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal (without the use of fever reducing medications).
  • Your child vomits and/or has diarrhea and continues to experience nausea and/or cramping. The child should remain at home until 24 hours after any vomiting or diarrhea has occurred.
  • A rash is present. Rashes must be evaluated by a physician and deemed non-contagious. Please send documentation to school.
  • Our child shows signs of upper respiratory infection (cold symptoms) severe enough to interfere with the child’s ability to learn.
  • There are signs of “Pinkeye” (conjunctivitis) with matter coming from one or both eyes, itching, and/or crusts on eyelids. The child must be evaluated by a physician and deemed non-contagious. Please send documentation to school.
  • There are open sores that appear to be weeping that have not been evaluated by a physician.
  • There are found to be live lice or lice eggs (nits) on your child’s head. The child should be evaluated and treated with lice killing shampoo.

ACTIVITY RESTRICTIONS: If your child is unable to participate in PE class due to injury or illness, a note from the doctor will be required. Any child restricted from PE class will be restricted from outdoor recess as well. Please contact the nurse for any questions regarding this.

HEALTH RECORDS

By law, all children entering school for the first time and all kindergartners must provide documentation of recent physical examination on the current Illinois form and of required immunizations on or before the first day of school. A dental examination is required in Kindergarten and second grade.

FOOD ALLERGIES

An increasing number of school age children have food allergies. Symptoms can range from mild reactions to severe reactions leading to the inability to breathe, a drop in blood pressure and unconsciousness. Please inform the Health Office prior to the start of school if your child has a food allergy. All children are discouraged from sharing food and snacks with classmates. No class treats are to be sent to school for any occasion. All daily snacks must be from the district-approved snack list.

Good communication helps insure the safety of all of our children.
